An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) is only good for one calendar year. The six digit number is only known to the taxpayer and the IRS. A tax preparer CANNOT request one on a taxpayer’s behalf. If an IP PIN has been issued to a taxpayer, any tax return transmitted without the IP PIN will be immediately rejected.
